On Wednesday, 20th November 2024, as part of the BRRIDGE (Horizon Europe Project) Lecture Series, Matej Bel University hosted a thought-provoking keynote speech by Professor Erik Jones, a renowned scholar in European and international studies. The event, titled “Choice, Discontent, and the Narrow Path to Democratic Legitimacy,” took place at the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations and was one of the highlights of the Human Forum 2024 conference.
Keynote Address: Navigating Democracy’s Challenges
In his keynote, Erik Jones explored the complex dynamics of democracy, focusing on the psychological and structural challenges of accepting electoral loss. He argued that the cornerstone of democratic legitimacy lies in the ability of individuals and societies to embrace loss as a natural and necessary part of the democratic process.
Jones highlighted the dangers of polarized politics, where elections are perceived as existential battles. Drawing on examples from the United States, he noted that the legitimacy of the system erodes when political choices are seen as bland or unrepresentative. This disenchantment, he emphasized, can alienate large segments of the population, creating a fertile ground for political instability.
According to Jones, the solution lies in finding a “narrow path” where democratic competition reflects meaningful differences while fostering an environment where losing is both acceptable and constructive. He urged audiences to reject binary, “Manichean” views of democracy and to prioritize stability and inclusivity over zero-sum outcomes.
Professor Erik Jones is a leading expert on European politics and political economy. He currently serves as the Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, one of Europe’s foremost research institutions in social sciences and public policy.
Jones’ academic work focuses on the intersection of political economy, European integration, and democratic governance. Prior to his tenure at EUI, he was a professor of European Studies and International Political Economy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna.
He is the author of numerous books and articles, including “The Politics of Economic and Monetary Union” and “Economic Adjustment and Political Transformation in Small States.” As a frequent commentator in international media, Jones offers insights on topics ranging from European Union policy to global economic governance.
In addition to his academic roles, Jones serves on the editorial boards of prestigious journals, including Government and Opposition, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the field of European studies.
BRRIDGE Lecture Series: Promoting Democratic Resilience
The keynote by Erik Jones was part of the BRRIDGE Lecture Series, a program dedicated to fostering dialogue on democracy, governance, and societal resilience in the context of the Horizon Europe-funded BRRIDGE project.
The lecture attracted a diverse audience, including academics, students, and policymakers, who engaged in a lively discussion on how societies can navigate the growing challenges to democratic legitimacy. By addressing themes of political participation, polarization, and institutional trust, Jones’ lecture contributed to the overarching goals of the BRRIDGE project: strengthening democracy and civil society through education, research, and collaboration.
