Jozef Michal Mintal, a member of our institute, presented his paper Beyond the Labels: Rethinking “Liberal” and “Conservative” in Central Europe at the European University Institute’s Political Behaviour in CEE workshop. Using a large‑scale experimental survey, the study examines how symbolic ideological labels form in the region.

The two‑day event (19–20 June 2025), convened by EUI Professor Filip Kostelka, brought together more than 40 scholars from Europe, the United States, and China to discuss political participation, democratic attitudes, protest movements, migration, party systems, and authoritarian legacies.

A particular highlight of the workshop was the keynote lecture by EUI part‑time professor Hanspeter Kriesi, who offered a reflection on the evolution of populism in contemporary Europe.
