EU&I is a comprehensive vote compass developed by the European University Institute in Florence, in collaboration with experts from the Universities of Lausanne and Lucerne, and with the involvement of academics across the EU. In Slovakia, EU&I is supported by Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. In this online application, potential voters respond to more than 30 political statements covering a wide range of current political issues and values in European politics.
Developed by academics for the general public, EU&I is designed to give voters a clear overview of the European election campaign and their individual positions within it. It does not aim to favour any political party or group of parties. It is based on extensive research and expertise in Voting Advice Applications (VAA). Its development is governed by strict academic standards that ensure the reliability and accuracy of the information provided.
EU&I helps voters orient themselves before the elections by addressing questions that have long resonated in society. Experts from Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica researched the positions of political parties in Slovakia on various issues. Information is obtained from open sources, and, where possible, political parties communicate their positions directly. Every statement must be supported by a specific source.
After answering all 30 questions, voters can choose the statements they consider most important. The vote application can then assign importance to individual areas and objectively evaluate preferences.
The result is a graphic representation of the voter’s attitudes, along with information on how these align with the opinions of individual political parties. The aim of the compass is also to increase awareness of the European elections.
There was a high level of interest in the vote compass in Slovakia. During the 2023 parliamentary elections in the Slovak Republic, Slovakia’s vote compass ranked among the highest in terms of usage within the European Union.
